 Sore or Cracked Nipples

Breastfeeding can be one of the greatest things in the world, but when you are having problems it can be one of the worst. If you have any problem breastfeeding like Mastitis, blocked ducts, or anything which gives you pain or makes you uncomfortable, you should go straight to your doctor, healthvisitor or midwife. These problems can be sorted out very quickly and easily. Whatever you do DO NOT STOP FEEDING ALTOGETHER you will get engorged which means your breasts will get full and will be very painful.

Sore or cracked nipples

Sore or cracked nipples usually happen because of your baby not latching on properly to feed. Just wrong positioning. Your skin will be red and it will be painful to feed. A cracked nipple will give you a shooting pain as your baby sucks.

Treatment

1. Dry your nipples after a fed, you could use a hairdryer on a cool setting.

2. let air get to them fro several hours a day, you could put a nipple shell (here is an example) over your nipple inside your bra to help the air circulate.

3. Change the position your baby feeds in, so pressure is applied to a different part of the aerola. (you midwifer or health professional can help you with this)

4. Express from the worst breast for a day.

5. Do not let your baby suck for more than a couple of minutes once your breast is empty.

5. If you are very sore you could try a sombrero shield.

6. A good calendula based nipple cream or antiseptic spray can help relieve soreness.

Prevention

Make sure your baby takes the aerola into her mouth. keep your nipples dry between feeds.
